Road Transport & Cross-Border Trucking — EAC, Central Africa & SADC
Road carries around 80% of all cargo on the Dar es Salaam corridors — and it is the mode that makes or breaks your delivery date. Enelian runs full-truckload (FTL) and part-load (LTL) services from Dar es Salaam Port, Kwala Dry Port, and JNIA across the East African Community, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the wider SADC region — Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and onward to South Africa — with our own clearance team handling the paperwork at every stop.

SADC & Southern Africa Trade Lanes
Tanzania is a gateway to the entire SADC market — not just its neighbors. Under the SADC Free Trade Area, cargo moving with a valid SADC Certificate of Origin clears at preferential or zero duty in member states. We run regular consignments on these lanes:
| Lane | Route / Border | Typical Transit* | Common Cargo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dar → Lusaka / Copperbelt (Zambia) | Tunduma / Nakonde | 5–8 days | Machinery, agri-inputs, copper/cobalt exports northbound |
| Dar → Lilongwe / Blantyre (Malawi) | Songwe / Kasumulu | 3–5 days | Fertiliser, fuel, manufactured goods |
| Dar → Tete / northern Mozambique | Via Malawi or Unity Bridge (Mbamba Bay–Cóbuè) | 5–8 days | Construction materials, FMCG, mining supplies |
| Dar → Harare (Zimbabwe) | Via Tunduma → Lusaka → Chirundu | 10–14 days | Industrial goods, agriculture equipment |
| Dar → Gaborone / Johannesburg (Botswana & South Africa) | Via Zambia or Zimbabwe transit corridors | 14–21 days | Project cargo, consumer goods, machinery |
| Dar → Lubumbashi / Kinshasa (DRC — EAC & SADC member) | Kasumbalesa (via Tunduma) | 7–14 days | Mining equipment, fuel, consumer goods |
*Indicative door-to-door times for compliant cargo with complete documents. Peak copper-export and harvest seasons can extend border clearance — we pre-clear to keep your schedule.
The Rail Option: When SGR Beats the Road
For bulk and containerized cargo heading inland, Tanzania's new Standard Gauge Railway offers a materially cheaper long haul. SGR freight trains now move directly from Dar es Salaam Port via the Portlink to Kwala Dry Port and Dodoma, running heavy payloads on fixed schedules. Regional benchmarks put rail at roughly US$600 per 20ft / US$700 per 40ft container for a comparable port-to-inland-depot leg — often less than half the road rate on long distances.
Our advice is simple: rail for the long haul, truck for the first and last mile. Ask us for a combined road-rail quote on your lane.
Cross-Border Compliance — Where Trucks Actually Get Stuck
Most border delays are paperwork problems, not traffic problems. Common traps we prevent:
• EAC cargo — one transit bond at Dar es Salaam covers the whole corridor to Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and DRC. We lodge it once, correctly.
• Zambia & Malawi — separate TRA + ZRA clearances, COMESA CD3 documents, and SADC/COMESA Certificates of Origin for preferential duties.
• Zimbabwe, Botswana & South Africa — transit permits and waybills for third-country movement; we pre-arrange at Lusaka and Harare to avoid held-up trucks.
• Tunduma/Nakonde — the Tanzania carbon tax must be paid at weighbridges before the border; unprepared trucks are sent back to the end of the queue. We pre-pay.
• Axle loads — EAC semi-trailers are limited to ~27 tonnes; overweight trucks are fined and offloaded. We weigh and redistribute before departure, not at the border.
Our Road Freight Process

- Pickup: container collected from the port/ICD or cargo collected from your supplier, with loading supervision and photos.
- Bonding & permits: transit bond, TANCIS declarations, and any permits lodged before departure.
- Transit: tracked movement with scheduled check-ins; weighbridge and border fees pre-arranged.
